Cette chanson inédite écrite en 1979 a été offerte en "deuxième choix" à Donna Summer qui en a fait un tube dans les années 80. En effet, la chanson originellement écrite par Bruce pour Donna Summer était en fait Cover Me. Mais, en entendant la chanson, Jon Landau, le manager de Bruce, sentit immédiatement qu'il s'agissait d'un méga-tube et conseilla à son poulain de la garder pour lui, ce qu'il fit. La chanson figure d'ailleurs sur l'album Born In The U.S.A. et fut le 2ème single de l'album. Enregistrée par Bruce Springsteen, "Protection" n'a cependant jamais été publiée par lui à ce jour.
