And the steel mills closed in the seventies and early eighties, and now you got about like 2/3 of the population left the town. There was thousands and thousands of jobs lost. And these people had built the buildings that we worked in, the bridges that we cross. I don't know what I'd do if I was 30 or 40 or 50 years old and I'd practiced my craft for 30 years and somebody told me that I wasn't of any use anymore, and that I had to find something new now because the world had changed. "Il y a deux mois, j'étais à Youngstown dans l'Ohio, j'ai joué dans la petite salle municipale, qui était, je crois, environ de la taille de cette salle ici, et c'était drôle, je suis entré, et la première chose que j'ai remarquée était ce groupe de garçons. Ils étaient les .................... Il n'y a pas eu de chanson sur le père noël ce soir-là, mais, voici une ville où durant toute la première moitié du siècle, il y avait l'un des centres de l'industrie de l'acier aux Etats-Unis. Et la plupart des fours ont fermé à la fin des années 70 et au début des années 80, et toute la ville a perdu environ les deux tiers de sa population. Il y avait des milliers et des milliers et des millliers d'emplois, et ce soir-là il n'y avait personne qui n'ait eu un frère, un père ou un grand-père, un membre de sa famille qui ait été affectépar ces fermetures. Des familles, qui avaient vécu dans la région pendant des générations et des générations, furent séparées. "Thank you. This is a ... I'm singing this song for a little while. This is probably ... this is our last night on the Tom Joad tour for a while anyway and I wanna sing this one. It was a song ... I got to Youngstown Ohio in the course of the tour, and huh ... was the center of steel industry in the United States for the first ... the whole first part of the Century and most of the steel mills shut down and a lot of the population has left town, and I guess this was a song about how it would be like if somebody come up after 34 years of doing ... doing one job, and tell you that ... that ... there's no work anymore and that you gonna have to find some other way of supporting your family and getting a sense of yourself ... so ... anyway, wanna do this ...this is a next group of songs from the Tom Joad record and I wanna say that I've enjoyed myself playing this music as much as I've enjoyed any music I've ever played, and my ... and when I originally made the record, I didn't know if there would be an audience for it, and if when I came out and play it, that that audience would be receptive ... I just wanna thank you because you have been so receptive to this music, beyond my wildest dreams, I appreciate."
